So September 30 is the mid-autumn festival. A very very short version of the tradition is that thousands of years ago there was a man with a beautiful wife. He was an archer who saved the earth and wanted to find an eternal elixir for him and his wife. He hid the pill, that would give them eternal life, in a box and after a few weeks his wife, Change, became curious of what it was and while looking at it, he came home and caught her off guard so she accidentally swallowed the pill and the over dose made her start to float to the moon. Where she still lives today. But every year, on the day she took the pill, her husband would have a celebration for her. This tradition is also found in Vietnam but the story is different. Something about a women peeing on a sacred tree then sitting on it. Anyways the festival is held on the 15th day of the eighth month in the Chinese calendar, which is in September or early October in the Gregorian calendar, For a lot of things China still uses a lunar calendar but it is very confusing to me. Then, October 1-7 is China's national independence holiday and they take a full week off of work. So, a lot of people travel at this time, or just enjoy themselves, because there is no school, and a lot of businesses are closed.

| We went to the grand opening of our new shopping center. They did some pretty cool ribbon dancing. But look at all the people. It was so packed. And it goes up 5 floors. Josh loved it! |
I remember reading a book in 5th grade I think about Chinese immigrants in the 50s or 60s and they ate moon cake. I always wondered what that was and what it tasted like and I secretly wanted to eat some. Now I'm jealous.

ReplyDeleteHow did you like the Crab? Noah is the same way about warming up to play. We can go to the park for 3 hours and he will start to play just before it is time to go home. He is even like that at family parties. He got it from my dad. That mall looks cool. What all do they have in there? Is it the one with h&m?
ReplyDeleteThe crab was good! I really like sea food though. Josh of course didn't eat anything. He never eats, unless its pizza or yogurt :) But yeah, maybe Josh and Noah, can go sit in a room for a few hours together at family parties :) Maybe Josh got it from your dad too! He is young so he might grow out of it, nursery has been really good for him the past couple weeks. So the Mall is awesome, they do have an H&M, walmart, mcdonalds, KFC, pizzahut, disney store, Zara, Uniqlo (I heard its like the gap, as far as style and prices go but still need to go check it out)They have DKNY, Levi, and other stuff I can't remember, but the essentials are nice, especially with winter coming up, I won't have to journey to far to get things :)We still need to skype! What are your kids going to be for Halloween? I'm sad to miss the holidays

I would like the mall about two weeks after it opens --- all those people make it very intimidating right then. :) That is a great picture of Spencer and his friend, but I don't know if we need anymore people here in the US of A that like shooting guns just for the fun of it. :)
